Fungal infection of the toenails can be an embarrassing and uncomfortable condition to have to deal with. With the proper treatment, even severe toenail fungus can be cleared up. Toenail fungus is caused by organisms that infect the nails. This is a very common condition for those who constantly wear shoes in warmer clients.
Common signs of a fungal toenail infection are nails that appear flaky and brittle and nails that are chipped, yellow, brown or black. The infection may become painful and can begin to give off a bad smell. Luckily, there are some simple toenail fungus treatments available for those suffering with this problem.
Tea Tree Oil
Using tea tree oil to clear up a fungal infection is an effective and easy solution. It’s a natural fungicide and antiseptic and works quickly on nail infections. Simply rub the affected nail with a cotton ball that has been soaked in tea tree oil. Do this 3 times per day until the fungus is gone.
Vinegar
To eliminate toenail fungus, fill a basin with 50% vinegar and 50% warm water. Soak your infected toenails in the basin for at least 20 minutes and then dry completely. Repeat this process twice a day until symptoms disappear.
Rubbing Alcohol
Using rubbing alcohol twice a day on the infected area can help to remove any fungal infection on the toenails. It can easily be purchased from any drug stores and you need to simply leave the alcohol on the toenails for a minimum of 20 minutes.
Listerine
Using a strong mouthwash, like Listerine, can help to eradicate a toenail infection. Soak the nails in the Listerine for 20 minutes and dry thoroughly. Repeat this twice a day until the fungus clears up.
Hydrogen Peroxide
Soak the nails in 3% hydrogen peroxide for about 20 minutes, twice daily. Use a mixture of 50% water and 50% hydrogen peroxide in a basin. Allow the toenails to soak and then dry completely.
Vicks Vapor Rub
Vicks vapor rub has been known to help stop the growth of fungus on nails. You should use the vapor rub until a new nail replaces the infected one. This option should be used if the others do not clear up the infection.
