As toenail fungus is a bacterial infection, there are treatments that can be used to cure it. But depending on whose advice you are following, there are just so many ways to try. Some people use prescription drugs as their doctor recommended it but other people use natural remedies as they have read about people using them and they work great at removing the fungus. So there certainly is a cure for toenail fungus, you just have to decide which one is best for you.

The main problem with powerful prescription drugs is the fact that they can have side effects. These can vary but the main one is people have suffered with liver problems as the medication that actually damage it is used regularly. So this is why many people are too scared to use them even though their doctor has prescribed them.

Natural treatments for toenail fungus on the other hand, very rarely have side effects. This is mainly due to the fact that they are usually topical treatments and not taken orally. They just work to try and kill the bacteria by making an environment that the bacteria cannot live and thrive in. This is done by constantly applying the treatment daily in an effort to kill them off.

These treatments can vary but the most popular ones are soaking your feet in water with some extra ingredients. The first one of these is vinegar. By using a strong vinegar in the water and soaking your feet daily in the mixture, it can help to reduce the bacteria that is causing the fungus to grow. This can also be done using Listerine mouthwash in the same way.

Whichever cure for toenail fungus you choose, just remember that the quicker you begin treating it, the less chance you have of it getting worse and even spreading onto your other toes.

Toenail Fungus: Ew, Gross!

You remove your nail polish (finally) and, even after a good scrubbing with nail polish remover, your toenails are kind of yellow . . . and they seem thicker than usual. What’s wrong? Sounds like toenail fungus . . . yuck! What do you do about that? Here are a few tips for dealing with toenail fungus.

The first thing you should do is trim your nails as short as possible, and keep them short – trim a couple times per week. This will help keep your toenails clean – shorter toenails can’t harbor as much dirt, sock lint, general grime, and of course fungus.

Now that your toenails are short, give them a good scrub. Use a nail brush, warm water, and strong soap, and scour around the edges, underneath, and on top. While you’re at it, get out a pumice stone and give your heels a little attention – if you’ve got fungus under your toenails, you’ve probably got callouses on your heels as well. Scrub your feet carefully every night before you go to bed, even if you normally shower in the morning – you want to get that fungus-causing grime off as soon as possible. Be sure to dry your feet carefully – moisture encourages fungus growth, so dry your toenails thoroughly every time you shower, before you put socks on.

Next you’ll want to treat the fungus – try an over-the-counter antifungal cream. If you aren’t sure which one to buy, ask your pharmacist for advice. You may feel a little embarrassed by your toenail fungus, but you can be certain that lots of other people have the same problem; the pharmacist has heard it all before. Use the cream as directed. And if that doesn’t do the job . . . call your podiatrist!
